At Suki, we are dedicated to reducing administrative burdens for clinicians by harnessing the power of AI to streamline workflows. Today, we are thrilled to introduce Ambient Order Staging – an industry-first capability that allows clinicians to generate and stage orders simply by speaking their recommended orders to Suki.

This groundbreaking feature eliminates the need for clinicians to manually navigate multiple screens and input order details, significantly reducing administrative overhead while ensuring that critical orders are placed efficiently and accurately.

A Transformative Step for Clinical Workflows

The introduction of ambient order staging is a game-changer for clinicians. Traditionally, placing an order requires multiple clicks and manual searching for the right medication. And if it’s a pediatric dose, there are additional clicks to go through a dosage weight-based calculator. This is disruptive to patient interactions and adds cognitive burden on the clinician.

With ambient order staging, clinicians can now discuss prescription orders with their patients, and Suki structures, codes, and stages them so it’s easy for clinicians to review and sign-off in the EHR.

How Order Staging works with Suki

Suki’s AI-powered ambient capability captures orders seamlessly from conversation. As the clinician discusses the order with the patient, Suki:

  1. Recognizes the order and extracts relevant details

  2. Structures the order with the correct sig, quantity, refills, frequency, and duration

  3. Codes the order to accurately reflect billing and clinical documentation needs

  4. Stages the order in the EHR for the clinician to review and approve

As always, clinicians maintain full control over the ambiently generated content – they can accept, edit, or reject any generated prescription orders before submitting to the EHR for review and sign off.

Key Benefits for Clinicians and Health Systems

  • Enhances Workflow Efficiency: Clinicians can focus more on patient care as orders are staged in real time, streamlining both during and post-visit workflows.

  • Saves Time: Clinicians no longer have to manually enter prescriptions. They spend less time documenting and staging prescription orders since they don’t have to manually search, add, and accept orders.

  • Improves Accuracy: By reducing the manual steps needed to generate prescription orders, Suki minimizes errors in order placement. With prescription name and dosage captured in the patient instructions, this can lead to increased code levels of the chart.

  • Reduces Cognitive Burden: By automatically generating orders from the ambient session, clinicians no longer have to keep a running list in their head of every order they need to place, which leads to a better clinician experience and satisfaction.

Overcoming Technical Challenges of Ambient Order Staging

Developing ambient order staging required overcoming significant technical hurdles, primarily due to the complexity of interpreting clinical intent in real time and ensuring precise EHR integration. Some of the biggest challenges included:

  1. Understanding Clinical Intent: Clinicians use informal, varied language, abbreviations, and shorthand when discussing orders. Suki had to develop advanced natural language processing (NLP) models that accurately recognize a clinician’s intent, even when spoken in an informal, conversational manner.

  2. Diagnosis association: To stage the order correctly, Suki’s AI had to determine the correct association between an order and the diagnosis, whether the diagnosis was pre-existing in the EHR or newly discussed during the visit.

  3. EHR Integration: Each EHR has unique requirements for formatting, medication mapping, and workflow integrations. Suki’s AI was trained to meet these requirements while ensuring compliance with FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) and other healthcare data standards.

What’s Next?

We’re starting with generating and staging prescription orders for athenahealth, with plans to expand to labs, imaging, referrals and other order types across major EHRs, including Epic, Cerner, and MEDITECH in the coming weeks.

Suki has already redefined clinical documentation with Ambient Problem-Based Charting, making it effortless for clinicians to create structured notes. Now, we are taking the next step in ambient innovation by transforming the order staging process – reducing administrative burden and allowing clinicians to focus on what matters most: patient care.
