Evolving the cursor: how Suki Dictation is powering the next era of in-EHR workflows

As clinicians, you’ve historically had to spend far too much time fighting your keyboard and not enough time engaging with your patients. As the Product Lead for Suki Dictation, my team and I have a singular mission: to make documentation vanish into the background of your workflow. Today I want to pull back the curtain on how Suki Dictation is transforming your daily EHR experience as we speak — and give you a sneak peek into an exciting, agentic AI-driven future that’s arriving sooner than you think.

What’s live today: EHR-integrated, self-learning dictation

For a product to be useful, it has to be present where you work. We built Suki Dictation to allow clinicians across all care settings and specialties to dictate directly at the cursor position within Epic and MEDITECH.

Here’s what our users are leveraging today to streamline their documentation:

  • Deep EHR integrations: We work with the tools and infrastructure you already use. Suki integrates via mSpeech for MEDITECH and SMART on FHIR for Epic.
  • Hardware flexibility: Prefer a physical microphone? We natively support professional microphones (including integrated push-to-talk and navigation functionality) to help you leverage existing investments as required.
  • Custom commands and auto-texts: Speed through repetitive text using scripts (auto-texts) and extension support for custom voice commands.
  • Self-learning ASR (automatic speech recognition): This is where the magic happens. Suki’s underlying ASR isn't rigid; it actively learns your specific clinical vocabulary and context over time, eliminates filler words from your notes, and self-corrects complex terms and medication names for maximum precision.

What’s coming next: ambient clinical skills and agentic AI

We’re fundamentally shifting from a tool that transcribes your voice to an agentic AI companion that understands and contextualizes your intent. Here’s what’s on our product roadmap:

1. Ultra-responsive speech and natural edits

  • Streaming ASR: We’re rolling out a next-generation streaming ASR engine that delivers ultra-low latency. Words will appear on your screen practically the moment they leave your mouth.
  • Natural-language edits: Made a mistake or want to rephrase a sentence? Instead of reaching for your mouse, you'll be able to speak naturally to edit, delete, or restructure text on the fly.

2. The leap into agentic AI

We’re expanding Suki from a dictation tool into an intelligent clinical assistant that can reason and execute tasks. The best part? This will all be available within the same surface where you currently dictate in Epic and MEDITECH.

  • Automated procedure and ops notes: Soon you’ll simply talk to Suki about a procedure, and instead of clicking into individual fields one by one, you’ll simply dictate the procedure as a continuous, natural monologue. Suki’s agentic backend will intelligently parse and populate the complex procedure or operative notes automatically.
  • Interactive clinical Q&A: Imagine needing a quick piece of data while in the middle of a note. Rather than clicking through endless EHR tabs, you’ll be able to ask Suki direct questions and have it instantly fetch what you need, whether it’s medical reference information or a specific data point from the patient’s chart.
  • Future agentic AI orchestration within the EHR: This surface will evolve into a personalized assistant that will be able to execute complex workflows, pull patient data, finalize documentation, and trigger follow-up actions.

Making your workflow smarter

The future of healthcare IT isn't about learning a complicated new platform. By bringing agentic AI directly to the Epic and MEDITECH dictating surfaces, we’re making the EHR work for you, not the other way around.

These updates are rolling out soon, and we can't wait to hear how they transform your day-to-day. Head here to learn more about Suki Dictation and to request a demo.
